An Introduction to Anti-Fragile

Updated: Aug 27

In 2023, Optus experienced a major network outage that disrupted essential services across Australia, including hospitals, banks, and transportation. The following year, a faulty CrowdStrike update caused widespread problems for Microsoft Windows users. These incidents, both stemming from relatively minor human errors, led to significant financial losses and disruptions to daily life.

Technology is there to improve our lives, however, its complexity has made us vulnerable to global outages and disruptions. Our entire lives rely on the internet, yet less than 1 percent of people actually know how it works.

If you’re running a business, are you aware of your vulnerabilities from a technology perspective? Do you think your business or organisation can withstand the next mass outage or disruption? Could your business be usurped by AI or a new technology you’ve never heard of?

Anti-fragile, in the context of business technology means that your systems not only survive disruptions but benefit from them. Instead of simply being resilient, anti-fragile systems are designed to learn, adapt, and improve in response to challenges. This might sound impossible, but it is certainly possible for a business to build a technology infrastructure that is not only resilient but also capable of thriving in the face of uncertainty. Anti-fragility ensures that your business can weather storms, learn from challenges, and emerge stronger.

When I speak with business owners, many of them don’t fully understand the technologies they rely on, and it’s no wonder given how complex technology can be. Having worked in technology for over 25 years, I’ve always wanted to bridge that gap, so businesses can thrive and not be afraid (or ripped off) from new technologies. I want your business to become AntoFragile.
